That’s why I wrote this Digital photography course about how to take good pictures in daylight.
Underexpose problem

The most common problem when taking portrait pictures of people outdoors is underexposing the person. You often see images where it looks like the person is standing in a shadow cast by something that doesn’t exist. On the other hand you see a very beautiful background. Why most outdoor portraits end up like this is because of underexposing.

How to fix this?

To get a portrait picture where both the background and the person seems to be standing in the same light you have to use the camera’s onboard flash. The flash will light up the person and compensate the underexposure. Why this work is because of the flash range. An onboard flash has a range of only a few meters, therefore it won’t affect your background only the person.

Why the problem occurs

These kinds of pictures, showing a person and a beautiful background, often have a purpose to show where somebody has been and what they’ve seen. When shooting a picture like this you want to show the persons face and as much as possible of the background.

The problem occurs because the camera is giving the background priority, due to it taking up more space of the composition.

Thanks for reading my digital photography course; to find some more tips please visit this page!

Digital Photography Course: Course Tip

Digital Photography Secrets

"This book covers everything you need to know to take stunning photos with your digital camera. Why do you need this option and when do you use it?

As said before, shutter speed determines the amount of time the cameras shutter is open for when taking a photo. In other words how long time light is allowed to reach the cameras image sensor.

Faster shutter speed = less light is let into the camera sensor. If you use a fast shutter speed you need a lot of light either natural or from a flash.

Slower shutter speed = more light is let into the sensor.

When to use slow/fast shutter speed?

It can be quite hard to know exactly which shutter speed to use, you may have to test your way to success. Finding the right speed depends upon two things, the light and what motive you’re currently shooting.

When photographing in low light conditions or without a flash you need to use a slower shutter speed to enable enough light to reach the camera sensor. This to ensure your photos don’t turn out black or very underexposed.

When shooting in sunlight on the other hand you need a much faster shutter speed or you will end up with overexposed images.

If you, for example, are shooting any kind of sports event and you want to freeze the action your option must be a faster shutter speed otherwise your image will be blurry. Photographing sport events or any other moving object in bad light is really hard, almost impossible. This is the right moment to use your flash.

It depends on your goal

Of course, as always the way you set your camera settings depends on what goal you have. If you want a picture where you can see the movements use a slow shutter speed or if your images get overexposed higher the speed a bit, it’s all up to you.

A good practice is to just keep an eye on the shutter speed and see which results you get. Play around with the setting, don’t be afraid. I like to photograph a water stream such as a river and try different shutter speeds.

Thing to remember:

Fast shutter speed = less light and freeze effect. Use when access to much light.

Slow shutter speed = more light. Use in bad light conditions.

When shooting at slow speed use a tripod to avoid camera shake.

To get the effect of something moving really fast us a slower shutter speed. I just know how I feel and react the first time I hold any kind of technological stuff, you are in a glass bulb unable to be contacted from the outer world, you just want to know everything there is to know about the camera and how to use it, or any other new device. The problem is, the manual is an inch thick and your mind is telling you to explore on your own.

I found the best way to become a friend with your camera is to follow a digital photography course. This way you’re able to learn the basics and explore on your own (with some helpful directions). I have tried a couple of different photography courses and found that almost none of them failed to tech me the basics, of course all courses use different learning tactics.

If I had chosen to explore on my own it had taken me years to learn things like shutter speed, difference between fast and slow lenses, different bulb modes and this things are critical for you to take good pictures.

My tips are, regardless if you are a beginner or have taken digital photographs for many years, take a digital photography course. It will help you so much and make your pictures look so enormously much better!
